Chesapeake Lighthouse Tour
Lighthouses are a special feature of Chesapeake Bay lore. Historically, they have provided mariners and fishermen with essential warnings of shallows, location of channels and a welcome reassuring marker of location. Each lighthouse on the Chesapeake is unique in appearance and represent emotional milestones in our Nation's history. On this cruise, we'll visit the most recognizable lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay, namely the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse.
Cruise Description & Itinerary:
Irie Vibes cruises down the gorgeous South River, to head northeast to the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. We'll get some great photos of this famous Chesapeake screw-pile lighthouse. You'll see where a British ship commanded by Admiral George Cockburn ran aground on the Thomas Point Shoal during the War of 1812 while they were chasing American clipper ships northwards. Cockburn went on to burn Washington and the White House in August, 1814.
We'll head towards the Bloody Point Lighthouse (caisson structure) at the southern-most tip of Kent Island and get distant views. But because it's really shallow by the lighthouse, we're better off seeing the ocean-going vessels anchored by the shipping channel (the course of the ancient Susquehanna River valley). We might see car carriers, tankers, bulk carriers, barges and tugboats and even cruise ships zoom along. We'll get views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge too. Then, we'll return to the South River and anchor in Harness Creek besides Quiet Waters State Park to lunch, relax, swim and paddle board.
