As we celebrate George Washington’s Birthday this February 22nd, we at Island Chill Yacht Charters invite you to explore the rich maritime history connecting our nation’s founding father to Annapolis and the magnificent Chesapeake Bay. Few Americans realize the profound relationship Washington had with these waters, which shaped both his personal life and his vision for our young nation.

Washington in Annapolis: A Historical Connection

George Washington visited Annapolis numerous times throughout his life, developing a deep appreciation for Maryland’s capital. On December 23rd, 1783, one of the most significant moments in American history occurred when Washington resigned his military commission to Congress at the Maryland State House in Annapolis. This unprecedented act of relinquishing power demonstrated Washington’s commitment to civilian leadership and helped establish the democratic principles we cherish today.

The State House where this momentous event took place still stands in Annapolis, just a short drive from our marina. When you charter with us, you’re sailing the same waters Washington traversed as he journeyed to and from this historic city. We are located on the South River where in the 1700’s, a ferry took travelers and trade across the South River on the north – south road between Charleston and Boston. George Washington crossed by ferry here many times, including December, 1783. He also stayed at the William Brown House in Londontowne on the bank of the South River. (Links).

The General’s Chesapeake Voyages

Washington was no stranger to the Chesapeake Bay. As a wealthy plantation owner from Virginia, he frequently traveled the bay’s waterways for both business and pleasure. His detailed journals document numerous crossings of the Potomac River, South River and journeys up and down the Chesapeake Bay, where he developed his nautical skills and appreciation for these magnificent waterways. In Washington’s time, the bay served as a critical transportation corridor connecting the colonies. Today, those same routes offer breathtaking sailing experiences – some views little changed since the 18th century.

Experience Washington’s Chesapeake

This summer, why not follow in Washington’s wake with a family sailing adventure on the Chesapeake? Here are some historically significant destinations you can explore on your charter:

  • The South River and William Brown House: Sail past the site where Washington traveled South toward his Mount Vernon home to retire (we’ll talk about his becoming our First President later!).
  • Annapolis Harbor: View the Naval Academy and imagine Washington entering this same harbor to attend Congressional sessions.
  • Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse: While built after Washington’s time, this iconic lighthouse stands guard over waters Washington would have navigated. It’s the site where General Cockburn’s British frigate ran aground in 1812, two years before Cockburn attacked Washington, D.C. at the end of the War of 1812.
  • St. Mary’s City: Maryland’s first colonial settlement and capital provides a glimpse into the colonial era Washington knew.
  • Mount Vernon by Water: Visit Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon estate, which is beautifully situated overlooking the Potomac River.
