Hove to – How to Stop a Sailboat

Can a Sailboat ‘Stop’?

Yes. it’s remarkable easy – with a bit of skill.  No anchor dropped, no motor running—just sitting there peacefully as if someone hit the pause button on the waves. Don’t hesitate to ask your captain on your next Island Chill Yacht Charter to demonstrate ‘Heaving to’. Trust us, it’s one of the coolest tricks in a sailor’s playbook, and there’s a good chance they’ll invite you to help!

What Is Heaving To?

The technique involves a specific arrangement of the sails and rudder that counterbalance each other (forces going forward and reverse at the same time). Here’s the basic recipe: you tack the boat but leave the jib (the front sail) backed on the old side, sheet in the mainsail, and turn the rudder to leeward (away from the wind). The backed jib tries to push the bow one way, the mainsail and rudder push it the other way, and—voilà!—the forces cancel each other out. The boat settles into a comfortable position, usually at about 50-60 degrees to the wind, and just sits there riding the waves like a duck on a pond.

Why Would You Ever Want to Stop?

Great question! Heaving to isn’t just a party trick (though it definitely impresses guests). It has real, practical uses that have saved sailors for centuries.

  • It’s a crucial in man overboard situations. If someone goes into the water, heaving to immediately slows the boat and keeps it in the general area; someone can swim to the boat. At speed, we turn around, return to the person in the water and hove to right next to the person – how convenient! . Time is everything in these emergencies, and heaving to buys you precious moments to organize your rescue.
  • It gives the crew a well-deserved break. Imagine you’re on a long passage and the crew is exhausted from constant sail trimming and steering. Heaving to lets everyone catch their breath, grab a snack, check the charts, or even take a quick rest—all while the boat takes care of itself. It’s like setting the cruise control, but for sailing.
  • On a beautiful day out on the South River or deep water of the Chesapeake Bay where we can’t logistically anchor, heaving to can be ideal to pause for lunch, take in the stunning Maryland scenery, or let the kids try some fishing without the constant motion of sailing. It’s peaceful, stable, and gives everyone a chance to truly soak in the experience.

Try It Yourself!

The beauty of heaving to is that once you understand the concept, you can actually feel how the forces work together. Our experienced captains love sharing their knowledge and might just hand you the helm or a winch handle to help execute the maneuver. There’s something deeply satisfying about feeling a powerful sailboat respond to your commands and settle into that sweet spot where everything balances perfectly.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a bachelorette party adventure, hosting a corporate team-building event, or just gathering friends and family for a day on the water, these are the moments that make sailing magical. It’s not just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about understanding the boat, the wind, and the water in a way that connects you to centuries of maritime tradition. A great experience and sense of power for kids.
